CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball ended a four-match losing streak with a convincing 3-1 win over Valparaiso Friday night.
After winning the first two sets by an identical score of 25-18, the Beacons (9-9, 1-5 MVC) dominated set three and carried momentum. They made a late run after the Salukis (9-8, 2-4 MVC) held the match point, but Annabelle Sulish's kill sealed the victory and tallied Southern's first win at Valparaiso since February 14, 2021.
Sulish put down 19 kills, five blocks and eight digs to lead the Salukis. Larissa Seger stuffed six blocks of her own, and Ema Stermenska led SIU with 25 assists.
The Salukis separated in set one with a 6-0 run to take a 10-5 lead and never looked back. The lead grew as high as seven and Southern cruised to a set one victory.
With a 10-9 lead in set two, the Salukis embarked on a 9-0 run highlighted by five kills from Sulish. The Beacons battled but could not get back within six and SIU took a 2-0 advantage.
Valpo never trailed in set three, and a 10-1 run midway through the set paved the way to a 25-15 win.
Set four was close throughout, and an ace from Jillian Shaneyfelt put Southern up 24-20 with a chance to secure the victory. The Beacons did not go quietly, scoring three points in a row and putting the Salukis on the ropes. As she had done all night, Sulish put the Salukis on her back and put down the final kill of the night and gave her team the much-needed win.
