CHICAGO, Ill. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball was swept by UIC Saturday night in Chicago, giving them a weekend split after defeating Valparaiso Friday night. The loss drops the Salukis to 2-5 in Missouri Valley Conference play.Â
The Flames (13-6, 5-2 MVC) never trailed in sets one and two, but Southern Illinois took command in the middle of set three. The end of set three contained no shortage of controversy, leading to a UIC comeback win in the set and a match victory.
Annabelle Sulish led the Salukis with 10 kills, and Cecilia Bulmahn tallied seven aces, tying for the third-most in a single match in Saluki history.
The Salukis claimed their first lead by scoring the first point of set three. UIC would quickly take hold and lead 10-6 before an 11-0 Saluki run gave Southern a 17-10 lead. During the run, Bulmahn had six of her seven aces. The Flames slowly fought back, and the mood in Credit Union 1 Arena was quickly changed after a controversial review. Leading 21-18, the Salukis cheered thinking they had earned a four-point lead, but the officials signaled a tipped block on a UIC attack that landed out of play. After a video review, the officials ruled that the play stood as called on the court, shortening the SIU lead to just two. The Flames would score six of the next seven points and clinch the sweep with a 25-22 set three win.
