EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball fell in five sets to Evansville Friday night. The Salukis dropped its first five-set loss in conference play and its first since September 13 at Lindenwood.
Evansville (3-16, 2-5 MVC) came out firing, taking a 2-0 match lead. The Salukis (9-10, 2-6 MVC) played clean in sets three and four to send the match to a fifth set, a situation the Salukis have thrived in thus far, but the Purple Aces controlled the entire set and brought home the victory.
Kelly Franklin put down a career-high 20 kills in the losing effort, and Anna Jaworski tallied her seventh double-double of the season by tying a season-high of 28 assists and digging 13 attacks.
Evansville's Guilia Cardona, who ranks second in the nation in kills and kills per set, had a season-high 37 kills and continued her dominance as the Purple Aces' offensive leader.
The Salukis led 18-15 in set one, but a 6-0 run from Evansville flipped the set in their favor, and the Purple Aces would ride that momentum to a 25-21 set one win.
Southern could not get within four after Evansville scored its tenth point in set two, and the Salukis quickly found themselves in a 2-0 hole losing the set 25-17.
Larissa Seger put down the final point in set three as the Salukis bounced back with a win of 25-19 to lengthen the match.
With momentum on their side, SIU held off several Evansville rallies in set four and sent the match to set five, a spot in which they were 5-1 heading into Friday's contest.
Set five was close as the Salukis only trailed 9-8 after Franklin's 20th kill, but three straight kills from Cardona paved the way for a 6-0 Evansville run that ended the match.
