Recap | Volleyball escapes Indiana State with key MVC victory

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball defeated Indiana State in five sets Saturday night in Terre Haute. The Salukis took a 2-0 match lead, but back-to-back close set wins by the Sycamores forced a winner-take-all set five where the Salukis comfortably won and clinched the Missouri Valley Conference contest.
Kelly Franklin and Annabelle Sulish combined for 39 kills and 36 digs to lead the Salukis (10-10, 3-6 MVC), while setters Anna Jaworski and Ema Stermenska combined for 71 assists. Franklin and Stermenska set career highs in digs and assists respectively, with Franklin digging 19 attacks and Stermenska assisting on 36 kills.
Set one was a back-and-forth affair, with the Salukis taking advantage of some Indiana State (3-17 errors and pulling out a 25-20 victory.
A 9-3 run opened set two for Southern, who never trailed the frame and flexed its offensive abilities in a 25-14 win which put them in position to sweep.
The Sycamores fought hard and narrowly led the entire third set before Kendall Curry extended the match with one of her team-leading 14 kills on the night.
SIU led set four 16-8 when the Sycamores embarked on an 11-2 run and turned the match into a slugfest. A balanced and efficient offensive attack helped Indiana State complete the comeback and send the match to a fifth set.
An early 6-1 run highlighted by two kills from Ella Swansiger provided a large enough cushion for the Salukis, who limited mistakes and cruised to a 15-9 victory in set five.

Southern Illinois will come home for a four-match homestand beginning Friday, Oct. 25, in Davies Gym against Belmont.
