CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball was defeated 3-1 by Illinois State Saturday in Carbondale. The loss drops the Salukis to 1-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play and is their fourth loss in a row.
The match was hard fought throughout, but the Redbirds (8-9, 3-1 MVC) kept the Salukis (8-8, 1-4 MVC) at arm's length and squeezed out a four-set victory.Â
Kelly Franklin (15) and Annabelle Sulish (14) combined for 29 kills, Jillian Shaneyfelt tallied 14 digs and Ema Stermenska had 26 assists.
After some early back and forth, Illinois State took command with a 6-0 run and opened up a 12-7 lead. SIU immediately followed that up with a 6-1 run, but Illinois State steadily held a lead late in the set and took the first frame 25-22.
Down 20-18 and looking to avoid a 2-0 hole, Franklin tallied three kills and fueled a 7-0 run to give the Salukis a set two victory and nod the match up at one.
Service errors plagued Southern all match long and were key in set three, giving the Redbirds just enough edge to win by another score of 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead. SIU finished with 13 service errors on the day.
The Salukis held only a 2-1 lead in set four, with the Redbirds taking control from that point onward. SIU closed the gap late with a 4-0 run, but Caitlyn Little sealed the Illinois State victory with the final kill of the match.
