
Recap | Herron Sets MVC Record as Salukis Finish with a Split

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's swimming and diving team finished Friday's meet against Illinois and Illinois State with a split. The Salukis defeated the Redbirds 227.5-72.5 and fell to Illinois 157-143.
Olivia Herron once again highlighted the meet, breaking another school and Missouri Valley Conference record in the 200-yard individual medley. Herron's time of 1:58.80 meets the NCAA "B" qualifying standard and breaks the MVC record by over a second.
The Salukis had 10 first-place finishes on Friday. Starting with the 200-yard medley relay, the Salukis took first place with a time of 1:38.75. The relay team of Celia Pulido, Olivia Herron, Bea Padron, and Susana Hernandez set new school and pool records in the event.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Hernandez set a new school record with a time of 1:47.30. In the 100-yard backstroke, Pulido set a new pool record with a time of 52.06.
Herron took first place in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. Zaria Terry recorded the top finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.45. Hernandez took first place in the 100-yard freestyle as well, finishing with a time of 50.04. Pulido was again victorious in the 200-yard backstroke with a first-place time of 1:56.58.
To close out the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Terry, Ava Rines, Hernandez, and Pulido claimed first place with a time of 3:21.05.
On the diving side Farida Moussa had a third place finish for both dives. In the one-meter Moussa received 238.15 points and in the three-meter 253.30 points.Â
The women's swimming team remains undefeated in the MVC heading into November. Both the men's and women's teams will compete again Nov. 16-18, when Southern Illinois hosts the A3 Performance Invitational.
