CARBONDALE, Ill. -Â Southern Illinois University's track and field program wrapped up day two of the Saluki Fast Start at the SIU Recreation Center.Â
Director of Track and Field Richard Jones gave his thoughts on how the Salukis competed in the first event of the season.
"It was a good showing today for the men's and women's teams, all of the fall training led to this first meet and I think the athletes did well," Jones said. "It gives them something to work on over the break and return ready to compete, there were some early season personal records that I was pleased to see as well."
Day two kicked off with the pole vault event. Dyson Roye came up just short in second place with a 4.65-meter vault height. Â
Next up was the women's shot-put event, led by freshman Elise Green finishing second with a 13.51-meter throw.
Christian Coleman pulled double duty on day two, winning the men's 60-meter hurdles and high jump events. After qualifying with 8.19 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, he raced in the finals, beating his semi-final time by .04 seconds to take home the victory. Coleman wasted no time and headed directly to the high jump contest, taking home his second victory of the night, with a field-best 1.95-meter jump height.
Jumps coach Jake Brydson shared his thoughts on Coleman's performance.
"Christian's 10-minute turnaround from his hurdle victory to his high jump victory leaves you as a coach awestruck," Brydson said. "He walked from the finish line, changed his shoes, and soared over 1.95 meters, completely unfazed at the moment."
Brydson continued "If there is someone who wants to know what were about as a team, they do not have to look very far," Brydson said. "It's a culture built around competing in the most pure sense."
Darius Fuller picked up where he left off in the triple jump event. Backed by the applause of his Saluki teammates and fans in the arena, Fuller jumped into first place with a 15.04-meter jump length.
"Fuller's sixth-round jump places him number 11 in the NCAA right now, after a long day, he completed his first indoor jump over 15 meters," Brydson said. "Fuller is the kind of guy who didn't miss a single one of his teammates jumps all day and was able to channel their energy into tremendous effort."
Jadon Robertson sealed his victory in the heptathlon, finishing with 4,708 points, 216 points ahead of the second-place finisher.
Track events finished the day starting with the men's 60-meter dash. It was all Dawgs in the semi-final race, holding the top four spots in the event. Kyle Burgoni led the charge, moving into a tie for third place in school history with a final time of 6.83. Jacob Morrison was the only Saluki to compete in the final, finishing second with a time of 6.96.
The Salukis filled up the leaderboard in the men's 200-meter dash, five of the top six spots in the race. Christian Donatelli won the event, finishing with a time of 22.60, beating the second-place finisher by .21 seconds.
The women took the stage next in the 200-meter dash. They held four of the top five spots, led by Iaunia Pointer finishing with a time of 24.60.
Saluki distance closed the show. The women led off in the one-mile run. Briana Nieset won the event with a time of 5:04.33, followed by the second-place finisher Hannah Meiser with a time of 5:06.56. The men followed suit with a third-place finish from Uriah Guthrie with a time of 4:42.44. Finishing 16.69 seconds behind the winner, unattached competitor Owen Morgan.
Distance coach Angelina Ramos was proud of the way Briana Nieset performed in her win.
"Bri is a fierce competitor and it was fantastic seeing her pour her love of the sport combined with the willingness to push and challenge herself in her favorite event."
