SAN MARCOS, Texas — Southern Illinois bounced back from an afternoon loss to Northwestern State, to beat host-school Texas State, 6-1, on Saturday night, handing the Bobcats their first loss.
Making her third appearance on the young season, freshman Maddia Groff (3-0) pitched a complete game, scattering 10 hits and stranding nine runners on base.
The Salukis (3-1) scored four times in the first inning on four hits to seize the early lead. They added solo runs in the second and fifth frames.
Sidney Jones led SIU's offensive attack with three hits and three runs batted in. She led off the fifth with a triple and scored on an error by the catcher.
Defensively, the Salukis played error-free softball, while the Bobcats (3-1) committed five errors on the night, which led to four unearned runs.
Groff, who has yet to walk a batter this season, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh, by getting cleanup hitter Anna Jones to fly out to left field.
The teams will play a rematch at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday in a game televised on ESPN+
