SAN MARCOS, Texas — In the final game of the Texas State tournament, Southern Illinois softball lost to the host Bobcats, 3-1, on Sunday.
The Salukis (3-2) were held in check by TSU pitcher Jessica Mullins, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and struck out eight on the day.
SIU broke through for a run in the top of the sixth with a pair of singles by Emma Austin and Rylie Hamilton. Austin came around to score on a throwing error by shortstop Hanna Earls.
Madi Eberle (0-2) pitched a six-inning complete game and took the loss for Southern, allowing three runs on just four hits.
The star of the tournament for the Salukis was freshman left-hander Maddia Groff, who pitched in three games and won all three. In 18.2 innings, she allowed one run, 10 hits, no walks and struck out 16.
Offensively, the Salukis were led this weekend by Sidney Jones (4-for-11, 3 RBI) and Emma Austin (6-for-17).
Next up for SIU is the Spring Games tournament in Leesburg, Fla. (Feb. 16-18). The five-game tournament includes games with UC Riverside, plus Big Ten opponents Iowa, Illinois, Penn State and Ohio State. All of the games will be televised, pay-per-view on FloSoftball.com
