LEESBURG, Fla. — Southern Illinois softball rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat UC Riverside, 3-2, on Friday in the opening game of The Spring Games tournament in central Florida.
The comeback began when Katherine Johnson led off the inning for SIU by reaching base on an error by the first baseman. Jackie Lis followed with a bunt single, and Elizabeth Warwick drove both runners home with a double to right center.
Madi Eberle (1-2) pitched her second-consecutive complete game to pick up her first win of the season for the Salukis (4-2). Eberle allowed six hits and struck out three. Both runs she permitted in the first and seventh inning were unearned.
Southern had six hits in the game, with three of them coming in the bottom of the second inning, as Addi Baker, Erin Lee and Johnson all singled, with Johnson driving home pinch-runner Amanda Knutson with her base-hit to left field.
The Salukis had just one more hit — a Johnson single in the fourth — until the seventh inning fireworks that saw the Highlanders (3-3) pick up an unearned run in the top of the frame, leading to SIU's comeback in the bottom half.
SIU plays Iowa this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
