
Recap | Salukis Defeat Ball State in Final Dual Meet

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois men's swimming and diving team fend off Ball State 181-118 on Saturday in their final dual meet of the season.
"I think both Ball State and we got a lot out of this meet, and it came at a perfect time of the season to tune up for the MAC Championships in just over three weeks" head coach Geoff Hanson said.
The Salukis had eleven first place finishes against Ball State. They started the meet strong with a first place finish by Alex Cimera , Nicolas Lanuza Tiago Faleiros, Nicolas Lanuza and Alex Santiago in the 200-yard medley relay. Ian Marshall followed with an individual first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:41.55.Â
The 200-yard freestyle had two Salukis on the podium, Alex Cimera with the first place finish and Will Chavez in second. Jered Moore had a first place finish for the Salukis in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.22. Alex Santiago once again was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, this is the third straight meet Santiago has had a first place finish in one or both of these events. Â
In the later half events Ben Rutledge had the first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle finishing in 4:40.61. The 100-yard butterfly went to Nicolas Lanuza with a 50.13 finishing time. The 200-yard IM was won by Saluki newcomer Benedek Andor and to end the meet on a high the Salukis took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.Â
On the diving side Lee Haywood had the second place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 298.35. Oliver Mebs had the second place finish in the 3-meter dive with a score of 312.68.Â
The Salukis head into Championship season and prepare to host the MAC Championship March 6-9th in Shea Natatorium. "The Saluki men showed a lot of fight and we feel good about our preparation at this point. Go Dawgs" said Hanson.Â
