
Recap | Southern Illinois Drops Overtime Heartbreaker at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (7-16, 2-11 MVC) suffered a 93-89 overtime loss to Evansville on Thursday in Indiana.
In a game that went back-and-forth most of the night, this was also the story in the opening quarter. Both teams scored 20 points each, with the Purple Aces finishing off the frame with a game-tying three-pointer at 0:03. SIU shot a blistering 64.29% from the field to start the night.
The Salukis went into the halftime break down by three after being out-scored by Evansville, 25-22, in the second quarter. The Aces matched SIU's first quarter field-goal percentage of 64.29%, and also went 4-of-5 from deep.
Southern Illinois held Evansville to its lowest point total of the game in the third quarter, as the Salukis out-scored the Aces, 20-18. The visitors once again shot 64.29% from the field in the third.
In the fourth quarter, SIU stayed efficient offensively, going 7-of-14 from the field and 6-of-8 at the free throw line to win the quarter, 21-20. Laniah Randle tied the game at 83-83 at the free throw line with 0:40 remaining.
Evansville took the game over in overtime, out-scoring Southern 10-6 in the additional five minutes. The Aces held the Salukis to 2-of-10 shooting from the field in the overtime period.
Randle posted a career-high 32 points in the loss, while Seairra Hughes had 18 points and 12 rebounds in tallying the double-double.
As a team, SIU shot 51.5% from the field, but allowed a field-goal percentage of 53.6% and three-point percentage of 53.3% for Evansville.
Southern will continue its four-game road trip on Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT) when it travels to Indiana State to face the Sycamores.
