SAINT CHARLES, Mo. – Left-hander Alec Nigut was one pitch away from a complete-game shutout but came up just short in the ninth as the Salukis would secure the 2-1 win over Lindenwood Tuesday night, extending the programs winning streak to five games.
Nigut was phenomenal in what was his fourth start of the season for the Salukis (11-5). The junior struck out eight Lion hitters and allowed just three base hits as he improved to 3-0 overall. After retiring Lindenwood in order in the eighth it was the Des Moines, Iowa natives' game in the ninth but the Lions had other plans to spoil the shutout.
Lindenwood (5-11) would work a leadoff walk before a groundout moved the runner into scoring position and a single from Dawson Hokuf erased the shutout.
The Salukis would go to the bullpen for Anthony Pron to close the game out and he would get the final out to close the game.
The Salukis would outhit Lindenwood 6-4 in the game and Steven Loden would drive in both of SIU's runs. Loden put SIU ahead in the sixth inning of play with an RBI single to left field to score Mathieu Vallee.
It was Loden again for Southern in the eighth with an important insurance run as the second baseman recorded a sacrifice fly to extend the SIU lead to 2-0.
Jordan Bach and Vallee each had two hits for the Salukis while Nathan Bandy was 1-for-3 from the plate.
Michael Walsh took the loss in a quality start for Lindenwood. The right-hander went six complete innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out three.
UP NEXT
The Salukis will return to Itchy Jones Stadium for a three-game series with Jacksonville State beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
