CARBONDALE, Ill. – Hesston Gray played the hero Friday night as the infielder walked it off in the 10th inning with his second home run of the game to push Southern Illinois past Jacksonville State, 7-6, at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The Salukis (12-5) needed two runs in the ninth to tie the game and both Cole Christman and Mathieu Vallee both came around to score after leading off the inning getting on base. After a bunt to move both runners into scoring position, Christman was able to come home on a groundout before Vallee scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
With one out on the board in the 10th, Gray belted a home run to left field for the first walk-off win of the season for the Salukis and the seventh under Lance Rhodes overall.
The Salukis would rally from behind from the start after Jacksonville State was able to score two unearned runs in the first inning. SIU bounced back with three in the bottom half highlighted by Christman's two-run home run.
JSU (8-9) notched two more runs in the fourth inning to regain the lead which signaled the end of the day for right-hander Mike Hansell. Easton Dermody was able to hold steady out of the bullpen for the second-straight outing as he allowed just one run over four innings. Dermody struck out five in relief.
Tanner Gerdes was able to keep the Gamecocks off the board in the eighth after entering with three runners on base. The right-hander struck out the first batter he saw before inducing an inning-ending groundball to strand the bases loaded for JSU.
Southern outhit JSU 11-9 in the game and the Gamecocks left 14 runners on base in the loss while SIU stranded just three.
Anthony Pron picked up the win for the Dawgs, improving to 1-1 on the season after pitching a scoreless ninth. Mike Hansell went 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out two.
Drew Collins led JSU with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while Will Baker went five innings and allowed four runs in the no-decision.
