Recap | Salukis Open Valley Schedule with 2-1 Win at Missouri State

Springfield, Mo. - Southern Illinois (16-4, 1-0 MVC) won its first Valley contest of the season with a 2-1 win over Missouri State (3-14, 0-1 MVC) Tuesday evening. The Salukis have now won nine straight games dating back to the WKU Hilltopper Spring Fling.

As the Salukis continued their streak, they ended Missouri State's 18-game home-winning streak which was the longest in the country before today. Â

Maddia Groff made the start and threw a complete game allowing just three hits, three walks, and one run. The Bears were held scoreless with just one hit for the first six innings of the game before a home run put them on the board, down to their final two outs. Groff managed to come back and close the game out for her 11th win of the season, moving her to 11-0.

Jackie Lis got the Dawgs' first hit of the day with a double in the third inning and was brought home a few pitches later on an RBI single from Sidney Jones. Lis led the Salukis going 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored.

SIU was able to add to its lead in the fifth after Bailey Caylor reached on a Missouri State error and was brought home on an Elizabeth Warwick double. She currently leads the team with nine doubles, second-most in the MVC.

The Salukis' defense made several key plays including a diving catch from second basemen Erin Lee that appeared to be dropping into no-man's land in shallow right field before Lee was able to chase it down and secure the out.Â

Southern Illinois will go for its 10th consecutive win tomorrow afternoon at 4 PM as it completes the two-game road trip to open the Missouri Valley schedule. Tomorrow's game will be streamed on ESPN+.
