Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois suffered a road loss in its midweek game at UT Martin on Tuesday afternoon. The loss marked the Salukis first since February 25 at the Michelle Short Classic against Purdue.
The Dawgs had won 16 consecutive games including eight Valley games as they fall to 23-5 (8-0 MVC). Southern will look to bounce back this weekend against UNI as the Panthers come to Carbondale for a three-game series this weekend.
Madi Eberle made the start for the Salukis and suffered her first loss in her last six starts. The Skyhawks were able to plate three in the second inning and jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Hockerman came into the circle in the third and went on to pitch three innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run. Totaling seven innings in her last two starts, the senior Hockerman has given up zero earned runs as her season ERA drops to 2.59.
Emma Austin got on in the fifth after a Skyhawk error and advanced to second on an overthrow as she stood on second with no outs. After stealing her Valley-best 15th stolen base of the season, Austin would come in to score on a wild pitch to give the Salukis their first run of the afternoon.
SIU got another run across in the seventh after Sidney Jones drove in a run on a single through the middle. Jones leads the Dawgs with 22 RBIs on the season.
Despite the loss, the Salukis still remain atop of the MVC standings as the only team with 20+ wins and an undefeated record in league play.
