VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (10-19, 5-14 MVC) earned its 10th win of the season on Thursday at Valpo, defeating the Beacons, 60-51.
SIU got off to a positive start, out-scoring Valpo, 14-12, in the first quarter. Jaidynn Mason led Southern with five points to begin the game.
In the second quarter, Southern Illinois extended its lead, pacing Valpo, 17-11, to take a 31-23 lead into the halftime break. SIU shot 53.8% from the field in the quarter, and 42.9% overall in the opening half.
Southern also went 3-of-7 from deep in the second, with Quierra Love, Paige Clubb, and Maddy Saracco all draining shots from beyond-the-arc.
Valparaiso out-scored SIU, 14-11, in the third, after holding the Salukis to 30.8% shooting.
In the fourth, the Salukis had their highest point total of the game, scoring 18 points as opposed to Valparaiso's 14 to win by a final score of 60-51.
Southern Illinois shot 39% from the field and 23% from deep in the win, while it held Valpo to 38% field-goal shooting.
Adrianna Katcher posted her first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Love's 18 points paced the Salukis.
SIU will conclude the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. against UIC.
