CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois men's golf team will look to enter the postseason swinging when it heads to the MVC Championship Sunday, April 21, in Sunrise Beach, Mo.
Southern Illinois will enter the MVC Championship alongside nine programs and will compete for their fourth MVC Championship win, the last coming in 2022.
The Saluki lineup will feature Edouard Cereto, Dain Richie, Andrew Thornton, Hugo Archer, Leon Heitz and Oliver Ulrich.
Head coach Justin Fetcho offered some thoughts on his six-man team.
"We have a great group of young men on this team, they have been working hard and are ready to go compete," Fetcho said. "They have been training for this all year and I know they are looking forward to the challenge".
The MVC Championship is a three-day tournament with teams playing 18 holes each day. It will take place at The Golf Club at Porta Cima, a par-72 course spanning 7,060 yards.
The Salukis will play on the heels of back-to-back top-5 finishes, placing fourth at the Hoosier Collegiate on April 6, and tying for second at the Hawkeye Invitational on April 13.
Head Coach Justin Fetcho has a wealth of experience with the Salukis when it comes to MVC Championships and is looking to capture his third title with the program. Fetcho has also tallied two 2nd place finishes and one 5th place finish.
The Southern Illinois men's golf team is led by two-time reigning MVC Golfer of the Week Edouard Cereto and junior Dain Richie, the only Salukis to play in all 32 rounds in the 2023-2024 season.
Cereto has been excellent all season, averaging 71.69 strokes per 18 holes, with a low round of 67. He tallied 11 rounds finishing in the 60s, and 21 rounds in the 70s. His top finish of the season came on April 6, where he placed first at the Hoosier Collegiate.
Dain Richie was not far behind averaging 72.13 strokes per 18 holes, with a low round of 66. Richie tallied 8 rounds in the 60s, and 23 rounds in the 70s. His top finish of the season came on April 1, where he tied for fourth at the Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate.
"Porto Cima is a great test for our guys," Fetcho said. "We have to drive the ball well, stay patient, and not press for opportunities".
