NASHVILLE – Southern Illinois baseball jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back en route to an 11-1 victory Sunday afternoon over Belmont at E.S. Rose Park. With the win, SIU earned the series sweep over the Bruins and moved to 24-16 overall and 8-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
With two outs on the scoreboard in the first inning and runners in scoring position, Trey Cutchen continued his hot streak at the plate with a single to center field to bring in both runners.
That would be all the aid that Saluki starting pitcher Aidan Foeller would need on the mound as the right-hander locked down the Bruins' batting order over six and a third innings of work. Foeller allowed only four base hits, no runs, and struck out five Belmont hitters to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Leading heading into the third, Southern would put up a five-spot taking advantage of three hits and two walks. Cole Christman brought home the first run with a double to left before Jordan Bach and Cutchen pushed runs across on a groundball and a sacrifice fly.
It was Justin Keuss who put the exclamation on the inning for the Salukis as the designated hitter lifted his first home run of the season out to right field.
Southern added two insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Jake Allgeyer and Christman both tallied RBI doubles in the eighth before Mathieu Vallee earned a bases-loaded walk and Allgeyer brought home a run on a groundout in the ninth.
The bullpen held strong for the Dawgs as Cole Koonce, Scott Harper, and Cade Carter combined to allow three hits and a run over the final two and two-thirds innings. Carter made his season debut in the ninth for SIU, allowing two hits and striking out one Bruin hitter.
SIU outhit Belmont 12-7 in the game with Allgeyer, Vallee, and Christman recording two hits each. Eight of SIU's 12 hits came with two outs on the scoreboard and seven came with runners in scoring position.
