Recap | Salukis Sweep Bruins Behind One-Hitter from Groff

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois (33-8, 17-3 MVC) completed the series sweep over Belmont Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout over the Bruins. The Salukis have now won seven-straight games including consecutive sweeps at Charlotte West Stadium the last two weekends.Â

Freshman Maddia Groff nearly threw her second perfect game of the season, allowing just two baserunners on the day. Groff sat down the first 14 batters she faced before an error led to the Bruins's first baserunner.Â

Still carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Maddia allowed her first hit of the day on a ground ball just off the glove of Sidney Jones at first base. Groff went on to retire the next two batters and capped off her second-complete game shutout of the weekend with 14 strikeouts and no walks.Â

In 15 innings of work over the weekend, the lefty totaled 22 strikeouts, zero walks, and just six hits, with two shutout wins and a save.Â

The Salukis were held scoreless for the first three innings of the game before a three spot put the Dawgs ahead in the fourth.Â

Addi Baker reached base via error to give SIU a leadoff baserunner and was quickly moved to third on Elizabeth Warwick's 16th double of the season. She now totals 48 in her career and is just one shy of tying the program record for doubles in a season.Â

Emma Austin drove in the first run of the day on a hard ground ball to the third baseman that gave Baker enough time to reach home. Rylinn Groff drove in another on the second RBI single of the inning before a successful double-steal from Groff and Austin put the third run on the board.Â

Coming back for more in the fifth, Jackie Lis blasted her 13th home run of the season and second on the weekend to lead off the inning. Lis has now homered 30 times in her first two seasons at SIU and ranks 7th in program history for career home runs.Â
