
Recap | Salukis Fall in Series Finale with Bears

Carbondale, Ill. – Southern Illinois dropped its series finale 4-2 to Missouri State in its final home game of the 2024 season. The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for the Dawgs as they finish the season 15-3 at home.Â

SIU took the first lead of the evening on Jackie Lis's third home run in her last three games as she now totals 14 on the season. Lis led off the fifth inning with a solo shot to put the first run on the board of the game. Lis is now tied for the Valley lead with 14 home runs on the season.Â

Riding the momentum of the home run, the Salukis continued to put together good at-bats in the fifth as Rylie Hamilton and Emma Austin both singled. Austin took her third at-bat of the game with the bases loaded and delivered as she beat out an infield single to send Sidney Jones across and make it 2-0 after five innings.Â

The Bears answered however with a pair of singles and a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to take their first lead of the game.Â

Maddia Groff made the start and was cruising through the first five innings with 11 strikeouts as she held Missouri State scoreless until the sixth. The loss marked her third of the year as she moved to 23-3 in her freshman season. Groff finished her final home game going 6.1 innings with 13 strikeouts and four earned runs allowed on eight hits, four of which came in the sixth.Â

Madi Eberle came in for the final two outs in the seventh and gave up a walk with no hits.Â

The Dawgs totaled eight hits on the day as Emma Austin and Jackie Lis both had two hits and an RBI each. Lis has had in hit in 19 of the 21 MVC games so far this season.Â

SIU struggled with runners on base as they left a total of 11 runners on, including the bases loaded in the first and fifth inning.Â

With just six games remaining in the regular season, the Salukis will hit the road for the remaining two weekends. Southern will head to Indiana State this weekend for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 26 at 2 PM CT following a schedule made earlier this week.Â
