Carbondale, Ill. – Southern Illinois defeated Indiana State 8-0 (5) in run-rule fashion to open the series on Friday afternoon. Freshman Katherine Johnson came into the game in the top of the fourth inning, subbing in as the designated player, and sparked a six-run frame with a leadoff home run.
Â
The home run by the freshman, Johnson, marked the first of her collegiate career. Johnson finished the inning bringing in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly before the frame was over.Â
Â
SIU wasted no time to get on the board as Elizabeth Warwick and Jackie Lis hit back-to-back doubles to open the game with Lis scoring Warwick in the second at-bat of the game. Warwick now totals 49 career doubles as she ties the program record held by Shaye Harre (2014-17).
Â
Maddia Groff made the start for the Salukis and went three innings, striking out five with no base runners allowed. Madi Eberle came in for the final two innings to complete the shutout as she struck out a pair. The shutout marks the Salukis' sixth in MVC play after a pair against Belmont last weekend.Â
Â
Jackie Lis hit a home run in her fourth-straight game as she now totals 15 on the season to lead the MVC. The home run by Lis came on the first pitch she saw in the third inning for her second RBI of the evening.Â
Â
The Salukis will look to secure the series over the Sycamores on Saturday with first pitch set for 1 PM CT.
