Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois started its weekend off with a 7-1 win in Peoria over Bradley. The Braves hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning but were kept off base for the remainder of the game as freshman Maddia Groff sat down 19-straight Bradley batters.Â
Â
Groff was a pitch away from her second seven-inning perfect game of the season retiring 21 of the 22 batters she faced on the night. Earning her 17th win of the season, Groff struck out five as the Saluki defense remained solid for all seven innings with zero errors.Â
Â
The Dawgs were able to tie the game in the second following a leadoff double from Emma Austin. Rylinn Groff executed with a sacrifice bunt to move Austin to third before Bailey Caylor drove Austin home on a ground out to the right side. The original ruling on the field was an out but after a challenge from Jen Sewell, the play went to review and was overturned. It's the second-straight game head coach Jen Sewell has had a successful challenge causing a big momentum shift in favor of the Salukis.Â
Â
SIU kept chipping away in the fourth as they broke the tie with three runs in the inning. Anna Carder drove in a run on a deep sacrifice fly to score Rylinn Groff. Rylinn sparked the three-run inning with a double to left center.Â
Â
With the bases loaded, Saluki RBI-leader Sidney Jones drove in two more with a double down the third base line. Jones was 2-for-4 on the night with two RBIs.
Â
Coming back for more in the sixth, the Salukis plated three more similarly to the third inning. The Dawgs took advantage of a Braves overthrow at first as Amanda Knutson scored after pinch-running.Â
Â
Rylie Hamilton plated the last two runs of the game for SIU as she doubled to right center field for her first hit of the night, going 1-for-3 with a walk.Â
Â
The Salukis will look to take the series tomorrow in game two as they go for their third-straight win. First pitch for Saturday's game is set for 2 PM.
