BATON ROUGE, La. — On day two of the NCAA Regionals, No. 9 ranked LSU beat Southern Illinois, 4-1, on Saturday.
The Salukis (43-10) will play an elimination game on Saturday night at 5 p.m. versus the winner of this afternoon's game between Jackson State and Cal. If Southern wins tonight, it will play a rematch with LSU on Sunday, but would need to beat the Tigers twice to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals.
All-American right-hander Sydney Berzon allowed one run on four hits to pick up the win for the Tigers (42-15). She struck out eight and did not allow a walk.
LSU struck first with a two-run homer by Taylor Pleasants in the top of the first. The Tigers added a solo run in the third.
Southern's best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth. Erin Lee led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI single by Emma Warwick. Berzon unleashed four wild pitches in the inning but preserved a 3-1 lead by retiring Rylie Hamilton on a foul-out to the catcher.
Freshman Maddia Groff took only her fourth loss of the season for SIU, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and three runs. Madi Eberle came on in relief of Groff and retired eight-straight batters before allowing a pair of hits and one run in the seventh.
