NORMAL, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball dropped its series opener with Illinois State, 10-0, in seven innings Friday night at Duffy Bass Field.
Illinois State (22-22, 10-9 MVC) scored eight runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the run-rule victory and extend its winning streak to three games over Southern.
Saluki right-hander Mike Hansell retired the Illinois State side in just eight pitches in the opening frame before the Redbirds came back to force Hansell into 28 second-inning pitches where ILS would take its first lead of the game.
Noah Rabin put the Redbirds in the scoring column with a solo home run to right before Judah Morris followed his teammate with a home run to left center.
The Salukis (26-20, 9-10 MVC) were held to just two base hits and only three baserunners in the first four innings with Steven Loden collecting both hits for SIU – both singles in the first and third innings.
It was the fifth inning when Illinois State pulled away from the Salukis with four runs. The Redbirds took advantage of a throwing error which shifted the momentum further for the home team.
Following the error, Illinois State's J.T. Sokolove was hit by a pitch to set the table for Luke Lawrence who singled home a run to make it 3-0. Auggie Rasmussen put his mark on the inning with a three-run home run and Illinois State did not look back.
The Birds added two runs in the sixth before on a two-RBI single from Sokolove before walking it off in the seventh.
Hansell was hit with the loss on the mound after the Redbirds sprayed five hits, scoring five earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Southern Illinois was held to just four hits on the day while ILS went for 12. Loden had two for SIU while Cole Christman and Hesston Gray had a hit each. SIU stranded five runners on base in the game, including three in the first three innings of action.
Cameron Mabee pitched six strong innings for the Redbirds to improve to 5-3 on the season. The right-hander struck out five and allowed just four hits.
Morris led the Redbirds with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a home run. Rasmussen drove in three for Illinois State.
