HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball secured its first victory of the 2024 campaign by a score of three sets to one over Chattanooga Friday in Huntsville, Ala. The match was the first of a three-game set for the Salukis at the Betty Austin Invitational, hosted by Alabama A&M.
After winning the first two sets, the Salukis (1-0) dropped set three before winning the final set by a rout of 25-13.
SIU was led by sophomore Ella Swansiger, who tallied 14 kills in her first match as a Saluki. Junior Larissa Seger led the team with six blocks, while Anna Jaworski paced the Salukis with 23 assists. Ema Stermenska tallied the team's first double-double of the season with 14 assists and 10 digs. Outside hitter Annabelle Sulish stuffed the stat sheet with 10 kills, seven digs, and four blocks.
Southern fell behind in each of the first two sets, but an 8-0 run in the middle of set one and an 11-2 tear in set two put the Salukis up 2-0 with a chance to sweep.
Chattanooga (0-1) took an 18-9 lead in set three before the Salukis looked prime to make another comeback, cutting the deficit to two at 19-17. But the Mocs scored six of the final seven and sent the match to a fourth set.
The Salukis took advantage of key Chattanooga errors, and a kill from Kelly Franklin sealed the twelve-point victory and ended the match in four sets.
