Narrow set losses plague Salukis, drop match to UIC

CHICAGO, Ill. - Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball went toe-to-toe with UIC in sets one and two, but could not edge out a victory in either, setting the table for a Flames' sweep Friday night in Chicago.
Head Coach Brittany Harry complimented her team's ability to build early leads, and gave credit to her kills leader, Kelly Franklin.
"We had some nice leads in sets one and two where we played steady, but we just couldn't put a ball away and finish at the end," Harry said. "Kelly was really good finishing with no errors, but I thought tonight we just weren't totally in sync offensively."
Sets one and two mirrored each other in many ways, with SIU holding a narrow lead late. The Salukis looked poised to go up 1-0, leading 20-17, but attack errors aided a 7-1 UIC run to put the Flames in the lead, one they did not relinquish, winning 25-23.
The aforementioned lack of sync offensively would be Southern's downfall in set two, holding leads of 21-20 and 22-21, but the Flames edged out the Salukis again, winning its second 25-23 set of the night.
The Salukis continued to battle early in set three, but could never take a lead, eventually letting up an 8-2 run to UIC that would put them behind for good.
"Tonight we had some really great service runs, but we ultimately made some errors at the beginning of the third set we just never recovered from," Harry said. "UIC is a very balanced team, so once we got one hitter contained, another kid was stepping up to score."
Ayat Amin and Cleo Lorenzo both had double-digit kills for the Flames, helping them outhit Southern .279 to .156.

Southern Illinois will look to salvage the weekend with a trip to Valparaiso on Saturday night. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
