Women’s Basketball Falls to Missouri in Hard Fought Contest

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Tuesday night, Southern Illinois women's basketball (1-2, 0-0) traveled to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Missouri Tigers (4-1, 0-0). The Salukis showed resiliency against the SEC member Missouri but eventually fell by a score of 81-50.
"There were some bright spots in there where we played with this team for a while," said head coach Kelly Bond-White. "And that's what we have to have, is just some continuity through substitution and we got to get these kids believing that they can sustain it. "
Inside the Box Score
How it Happened
First Quarter
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but back-to-back buckets from Cooper and Indya Green pulled SIU back within one. Missouri took control back however and soon bumped their lead up to double-digits, 22-11, with less than two minutes to play in the quarter.
Southern thrived in the final 80 seconds. A second-chance three-ball from Cooper followed up by layups from Nelson and Allen cut the deficit to four, 22-18, heading into the break.
Second Quarter
Missouri did not mess around coming out of the quarter-break. Nine straight points set the score at 29-18. SIU did not back down however, dropping seven points in-a-row to pull back within six, 31-25.
As time wound down in the half, Missouri improved their lead to double-digits again, 36-26, with just over a minute left on the clock. The Salukis got some points back thanks to a Cooper jumper, but a last second layup from the Tigers set the deficit back at 10 for the Salukis, 38-28.
Third Quarter
The teams traded blows coming out of the locker rooms. SIU momentarily cut the deficit to single-digits after a Green tip-in, but that momentum was cut short by a Missouri three. A 7-2 run in favor of the Tigers made it a near 20-point lead.
Following a lengthy scoring drought from both teams, the Salukis used a pair of free throws and a three to pull within 13, 55-42, with less than a minute remaining in the quarter. A Missouri layup with 14 seconds on the clock was the final score change of the quarter, making the score 57-42 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Fourth Quarter
Missouri kept the Salukis in check to start the final frame, outscoring SIU 12-4 in the first five minutes. Eventually down 71-46, Southern got a little boost from a Hiba Malkawi three, but an eight-point jaunt from the Tiger negated any SIU momentum.
Green scored SIU's final point of the game with a last minute free throw before one more Missouri layup set the score at its final total, 81-50.
