CARBONDALE, Ill. – Following a 14-game homestand, Southern Illinois softball (13-14, 5-0) hits the road this weekend to visit Valparaiso (12-10, 1-1) for a three-game series.

Softball is coming off a two-game sweep of Missouri State in a midweek series.
The Salukis won a nailbiter on Tuesday, 8-7 in eight innings. Sage Grann was the hero of the game, delivering a walkoff RBI double in the eighth. Erin Lee had a massive hit as well, launching a grand slam to total four RBIs. Anna Carder, Emily Williams, and Mikaela Coburn had RBIs as well.
SIU's offense came to life on Wednesday as they downed the Bears 9-2. Another grand slam was hit this game, this time by Carder. Williams and Addi Baker had home runs too, and Grann, Lee, and Jackie Lis also drove runs in. In the circle, Kiana McDowell threw five innings while allowing just two earned runs.
The Series and the Matchup
All-time, Southern leads the series 14-1. The squads last met in 2023 when the Salukis swept Valparaiso at home in a three-game series. SIU won by run-rule every game, winning 11-0, 12-0, and 9-1. Valparaiso's only win against SIU came in 2018 when they hosted and defeated Southern 7-6 on March 30.
As for Valparaiso, they enter the series with a 12-10 overall record while being 1-1 in conference. They are coming off a series split at Indiana State. The Sycamores took the series opener on Friday, 6-2, before Valparaiso won 3-2 in 11 innings on Saturday. Sunday's series finale between the two was cancelled. This upcoming series versus Southern will be Valparaiso's home opener.
