MARTIN, Tenn. – Southern Illinois baseball continued its strong start to the season with a 9-3 road win over UT Martin on Tuesday night at Skyhawk Field, powered by a balanced offensive attack and another strong outing from starting pitcher Tyler Timmerman.

The Salukis (16-7) jumped ahead early with a two-run first inning, thanks to a two-run triple from Gabe Petrucelli. They added to their lead with a sacrifice fly from Kaleb Hall in the second and a two-run homer by Mason Schwalbach in the third to make it 5-1.

SIU kept the pressure on late, capping the night with a three-run eighth, highlighted by a three-run blast from Matt Schark -- his team-best seventh home run of the season.

Timmerman (3-1) delivered 5.2 strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five. Dalton Petrey and Garrett Wernsing combined 3.1 innings of relief to close out the win. Petrey was able to sit down two of the five Skyhawk hitters he faced on punchouts in the relief appearance.

UT Martin (10-14) struggled to capitalize on its scoring opportunities, stranding 11 runners. The Skyhawks got an RBI single from Wesley Popick in the sixth before the Salukis got out of the bases-loaded jam after Petrey induced a fly ball to end the inning. UTM added a sacrifice fly from Chase Greene in the ninth but couldn't string together enough offense to threaten SIU's lead.

Southern Illinois finished with 10 hits, with Schark, Petrucelli, and Schwalbach each driving in multiple runs. Jaxon Holder added a double and a run scored. UT Martin matched SIU with 10 hits but struggled with timely hitting, leaving runners on base in key spots.

Long (0-1) took the loss for UT Martin, allowing five runs in three innings. Offensively, the Skyhawks were led by first baseman Cole Capps, who went 3-for-4, and Wesley Popick, who added two hits and an RBI.

Southern Illinois will host UT Martin on Wednesday, March 26 at Itchy Jones Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
