WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - Southern Illinois Men's Golf finished seventh in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship tournament Tuesday in West Des Moines, Iowa. The Salukis put together the second-best score of day two as they tried to dig out of a tenth-place hole, but could not carry the momentum into round three and compiled the round's highest score of 298 (+10). SIU finished 27 strokes behind tournament champion Illinois State.
Head Coach Justin Fetcho believes championship golf starts with a confident mindset, something he believes his team should have had based on all their hard work.
"When you get to the championship portion of your season, you have to come in with an unwavering confidence because you've put in the work all year long and I think for us, we could withstand one mistake or one missed shot, but we couldn't get over the hump of doing whatever it takes to score."
Despite the less-than-desirable result from himself and the team, Anthony De Schutter was named to the All-Conference team and was named the MVC's Newcomer of the Year for the 2024-25 season.
"Anthony has an incredible year," Fetcho said. "He was a consistent performer for us and I am glad to see his accomplishments and hard work get recognized."
Here is how the Saluki golfers fared:
The high expectations heading into the tournament make this result much harder to swallow for Fetcho and the team.
"We set out with a big goal this year and unfortunately we weren't able to accomplish it. We've tried to set the bar high here which is why the way things finished this year stings pretty hard," Fetcho said.

The 2024-25 season has concluded, and the Salukis will begin preparation for the next season.
