CARBONDALE, Ill. – Competition at Southern Illinois University officially concluded this past week with track and field's participation at the NCAA West Regional. Meanwhile, baseball received more postseason awards.
Track and Field
SIU sent nine participants to the NCAA West Regional last week. Unfortunately, no one advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
On day one of the events, Darrione Williams kicked things off with a 29th-place finish in the long jump event. Andre Jackson II then just missed qualifying for the quarterfinals in the 400-meter dash with his time of 46.31. Day one ended with Shane Ashton making the quarterfinals after placing 14th in the 400-meter hurdles.
Day two started with Leah Thames and Teanna Bell putting up times of 53.52 and 53.96, respectively, in the 400-meter dash, but falling just short of qualifying for the next round. Thames had another close finish in the 200-meter dash, with her time of 23.47 being less than a second off of qualifying for the quarterfinals.
Ashton was back in action on day three, finishing 18th in the 400-meter sash with his run of 51.31. The men's 4x400-meter relay team closed out the day with a performance of 3:07.58.
Southern's season ended on day four with the women's 4x100-meter race, in which the Salukis finished 19th.
Baseball
Postseason honors continued to roll in for baseball this past week as three team members were honored as Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes.
Jaxon Holder and Sam Frizzi were named to the First Team while Dylan Petrey earned Second-Team honors.
