
This Week in Saluki Athletics: November 3-9

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Crossover season is officially here at Southern Illinois. While a few fall sports have wrapped up their season, volleyball and football are still working through their schedules. At the same time, both basketballs begin their seasons this week.
Soccer (10-6-3, 4-4-1)
Soccer ended their season this past week with a pair of games: the regular season finale and the first round of the Missouri Valley Tournament.
The regular season ended on Thursday for soccer, who lost 1-0 at Drake. Reagan Miller made four saves in goal for Southern while Nao Katamoto was the only Saluki to register multiple shots on goal with two.
The 2025 soccer season then came to a close on Sunday when the fifth-seeded Salukis fell 2-1 in overtime against #4 Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference quarterfinals. Sophia Schlicklin scored the lone goal for the Saluks while in net Lily Murray made four saves in 59 minutes and Miller made one save in relief.
SIU ends the 2025 season with a record of 10-6-3 in overall play, a new program record for single season wins, and a conference mark of 4-4-1.
Volleyball (10-16, 4-8)
Volleyball hosted both Iowa schools this past week.
On Thursday, the Salukis fell to Drake, 3-1. Annabelle Sulish was the kills leader for the Salukis with 15 while Emma Lade dished out 28 assists. Defensively, Jillian Shaneyfelt had 16 digs and Larissa Seger had five blocks.
Then, on Saturday, UNI visited Carbondale and defeated SIU 3-1. Sulish once again led the team in kills with 13 while Lade added another 29 assists to her season total. Shaneyfelt had a monster defensive game, compiling 29 digs and Seger had another six blocks.
Volleyball's home portion of the 2025 schedule comes to an end this week. On Friday, Nov. 7, they host Murray State at 6 p.m. for Faculty Appreciation Night and whiteout. Then, on Saturday, Nov. 8, Southern welcomes Belmont to Carbondale for Senior Night (Blackout) at 5 p.m.
Football (6-3, 3-2)
Football was on the road Saturday, defeating Murray State 27-7 in a rainy game. DJ Williams threw for 171 yards and a touchdown while also rushing two scores in. Edward Robinson had a monster game on the ground, racking up 109 yards while Lem Wash reeled in the one passing touchdown. Cejai Parson picked up a pair of interceptions while Caden Reeves forced a fumble.
The Salukis are back in ranked play this weekend, taking on #22/21 Youngstown State on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. (CST).
Men's Golf
The fall season came to a close last week for men's golf at the Ka'anapali Classic, where the Salukis finished in eighth place. Anthony De Schutter finished first among Salukis, tying for 18th after finishing nine-under. Ben Keil had a strong tournament as well, finishing eight-under to tie for 25th.
Men's golf now turns their attention to the spring season, which begins on February 8 in Puerto Rica at the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate.
Cross Country
Cross country ended their season at the MVC Championships on Friday.
The women's team finished in last place with 305 points. Riley Linville led the Salukis' women's squad with her run of 23:15.84. On the men's side, SIU placed 10th. Ben Chance was SIU's lead runner, coming in 33rd with a run of 25:30.94.
If the Salukis send any runners to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, that will take place on November 14.
Swim and Dive
While swim and dive was not in competition last week, the team received another weekly award from the MVC as Olivia Herron was named the Women's Swimmer of the Week for her efforts during SIU's tri-meet against Illinois and Illinois State on October 24 and 25. Herron took home gold in all four individual events she participated in (the 200-yard breaststroke, 100-yard IM, 100-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard IM). She also helped SIU win the 400-yard medley relay. Additionally, Herron set a new personal best in the 100-yard IM and set three new pool records at Illinois' ARC Pool.
Men's Basketball
The 2025-26 men's basketball season officially kicks off this week. On Monday, Nov. 3, they welcome McKendree to Carbondale for the season-opener at 7 p.m. Then, on Friday, Nov. 7, they UMKC visits SIU for a 7 p.m. game.
Women's Basketball
Women's basketball also begins their regular season this week when Lewis comes to Carbondale on Tuesday, Nov. 4, for the 11 a.m. Elementary Day game.
