CARBONDALE, Ill. – Another busy week in Southern Illinois athletics has come and gone. Soccer returned home for the first time in a few weeks, while volleyball, football, and men's golf found success on the road. Then, this week, women's golf kicks off their 2025 season while cross country is back in action at home.
Soccer (6-1-2, 0-0-0)
The Salukis returned home this week for two matches, both of which resulted in a tie.
First was Thursday's 1-1 draw with Chicago State. Both teams were responsible for an own-goal while Reagan Miller had a strong game in net, making six saves.
The week then ended with a 0-0 tie against UT-Martin on Sunday. SIU played lockdown defense, holding the Skyhawks to zero shots on goal. On the offensive end, Londyn Soto and Olivia Anderson both had multiple shots on goal.
Conference play now begins for SIU. On Friday, Sept. 19, the team welcomes Belmont to Carbondale for a 6 p.m. game and Youth Soccer Day.
Volleyball (4-5, 0-0)
Volleyball spent the weekend up in Michigan for the Golden Grizzly Invite.
The Invite started on Friday when SIU beat the host school, Oakland, 3-1. Three Salukis, Cecilia Bulmahn, Ella Swansiger, and Larissa Seger, finished the game with double-digit kills. Meanwhile, Emma Lade dished out 34 assists. And on the defensive end, Seger put up five solo blocks.
Later on Friday, Southern fell 3-1 to Eastern Michigan. Kelly Franklin led the team in kills with 16, while Seger and Annabelle Sulish were right behind her with 15 each. Lade improved on her game one performance with 37 assists. Jillian Shaneyfelt was the team's dig leader with 12.
SIU's run at the Invite concluded on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Xavier. Kelly was once again the team's kill leader, this time with 12. Lade put up 23 assists while Shaneyfelt was the only Saluki in double-digit digs with her 11.
Southern is on the road this week for the Razorback Invitational, their final trio of games before Missouri Valley Conference play begins. On Thursday, Sept. 18, the team plays Arkansas, the host school, at 7 p.m. They then face Arkansas State on Friday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. Finally, on Saturday, Sept. 20, the Salukis play North Dakota State at 11 a.m.
Football (2-1, 0-0)
Football found its way back into the win column this weekend when they took down UT-Martin 37-10. DJ Williams threw for one touchdown while rushing three in across 128 rushing yards. Chandler Chapman had a rushing score as well as he collected 78 net yards on the ground. Fabian McCray had the team's one receiving touchdown. Defensively, Andrew Behm forced a fumble while Vinny Pierre Jr. snagged an interception for a second straight game.
It is now rivalry weekend for Southern as they head to SEMO on Saturday, Sept. 20, for a 6 p.m. game.
Men's Golf
Men's golf was in action for the first time this fall season last Monday and Tuesday at the Wildcat Invitational where the team finished fourth among 14 competing teams. Anthony De Schutter was the big winner of the tournament, winning the tournament with his four-under-par performance. His tournament win then earned him MVC Golfer of the Week. Ben Keil had a strong performance as well, tying for 12th place at the tournament with a score +3.
The team now has a week to prepare before heading to the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, Sept. 22, for a two-day tournament.
Women's Golf
This week, it is women's golf's turn to start their fall season. They will spend today, Monday, and tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Paducah, Kentucky, for The Velvet, hosted by Murray State.
Cross Country
The cross country team is back in action this week when they host the Oscar Moore Invitational on Friday, Sept. 19.
