This Week in Saluki Athletics: January 6-11

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois athletics are back in full swing. Both basketballs were in action twice over the past week and have games awaiting them this week. Meanwhile, swim and dive has back-to-back meets this weekend, including senior day.
Men's Basketball (8-8, 2-3)
Men's basketball picked up a pair of crucial conference wins last week.
First was their 75-70 win over Valparaiso on New Year's Day. Prince Aligbe and Quel'Ron House both scored 12 points to lead the offense, while Rolyns Aligbe grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and fell just one points short of a double-double. Drew Steffe was the main assistman, dishing out four helpers.
SIU then had a thrilling, 68-67, win over Belmont on Sunday thanks to a last second bucket from House. House also led the Salukis in points with 15 and assists with four, while Isaiah Stafford and Jalen Haynes joined him in double-digits with 14 and 13.
The Salukis are back in action once this week. On Wednesday, Jan. 7, they visit UIC at 7 p.m.
Women's Basketball (3-10, 0-4)
Women's basketball completed their Iowa trip this past weekend, falling to both Drake and UNI.
On Friday, they lost 89-75 versus Drake despite leading the game at half. Indya Green had a massive 20-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Alayna Kraus, Kayla Cooper, and Jeniah Thompson all had 10+ points as well. Thompson also had 13 rebounds to complete a double-double.
Southern then fell 91-64 at UNI on Sunday. Cooper and Thompson were in the double-digits for points again with 11 and 10. Notably, Kraus' double-digit point streak, which had lasted the whole season, came to an end with her nine points.
Two games await the Salukis this week. On Thursday, Jan. 8, SIU hosts Evansville at 6 p.m. They then welcome Valparaiso to Carbondale on Saturday, Jan. 10, for a 2 p.m. match.
Swim and Dive
The swim and dive squad is back in action following the winter break this week with two meets. On Friday, Jan. 9, the men's squad visits Purdue for a 2 p.m. meet. The Salukis are all in action on Saturday, Jan. 10, versus Indiana State and Evansville for Senior Day.
