Swim and Dive Concludes Home Schedule with Pair of Meets this Weekend

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois swim and dive is back at Shea Natatorium this weekend with a pair of meets to wrap up their slate of home meets this season. On Friday, the team welcomes McKendree to Carbondale before the women's team faces off against Vanderbilt on Saturday, which will also be Southern's Special Olympics meet.

Last Time Out
The Salukis are coming off a pair of meets last weekend as well. On Friday, the men's team visited and lost to Purdue, 207-103. Carter Ruthven and Juraj Barcot both walked away with an event win, while Alex Cimera won two events: the 200-freestyle and 100-freestyle.
SIU then turned their attention to Saturday's Senior Day meet against Evansville and Indiana State's women's squad. The Saluki men beat Evansville 221-78, as did the women's team, 225-59. However, Indiana State took down Southern's women's team 156-140. Event winners for Southern included Joshua Aceves, Susy Hernandez, Willem Huggins, Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez, Olivia Herron, Maddax Thompson, Nate Worsham, Bendek Andor, Oliver Mebs, Barcot, and Cimera.
Weekly Honors
On Wednesday of this week, Cimera and Hernandez were honored by the Missouri Valley Conference as the Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week. Cimera ended up collecting four individual wins between the two meets as well as one relay win. As for Hernandez, she won two individual events on Saturday while also being a part of one relay-winning team.
The Matchup
McKendree comes in with a 3-1 record on the men's side while their women's team is 1-2. Most recently, the Bearcats hosted Washington (St. Louis), where the men won 157-123 while the women fell 179-109. Southern and McKendree have crossed path before this season. Both teams participated in the Mizzou Invitational in late November. There, the McKendree men claimed fourth place out of the six team competing while the women's squad came in sixth.
As for Vanderbilt, their women's team is currently 2-5. Most recently, they fell 165-128 at San Diego and have not won a traditional meet since they defeated McKendree on November 1. However, before the Commodores visit Carbondale, on Friday, Jan. 16, they play host Kentucky and Texas A&M.
Special Olympics Meet
Saturday's meet versus Vanderbilt is also SIU's Special Olympics meet, featuring The Big Muddy Crew, a regional team of Special Olympics – Illinois. Athletes from The Big Muddy Crew will be highlighted at the meet and will partake in a 25-yard exhibition during the first break in the meet. Additionally, a Chuck-a-Duck fundraiser will run all meet long, and the Chuck-a-Duck competition will be held during the meet's second break. All fundraised money will go towards Special Olympics – Illinois.
