
Salukis Douse Flames with Wild, 63-58, Win

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois women's basketball (5-12, 2-6) closed the week by welcoming UIC (8-10, 3-4) to Carbondale on Sunday. After 40 minutes of back-and-forth action, the Salukis walked away with a 63-58 win.
"The energy we brought for 40 minutes was tremendous," says head coach Kelly Bond-White.

How it Happened
First Quarter
Both squads scored a bucket in the opening minute of play. The teams proceeded to trade baskets until the 6:27 mark when consecutive scores gave UIC an 8-6 lead. A third straight score bumped UIC's lead to 10-6.
Green ended the Flames' run, but UIC followed that up with another score to maintain a four-point lead. After nearly three minutes of scoreless action, Green struck again to make it 12-10. Both teams would score two points in the final minutes of the quarter to make it 14-12 Flames going into the second frame.
Second Quarter
Cooper scored on a layup to start the second quarter, tying the game at 14 all. A 4-0 run by UIC built them an 18-14 lead. Following a SIU score, another four points by the Flames gave them a six-point advantage.
Six consecutive points from Green knotted the game at 22-22, and a layup from Tkiyah Nelson with 3:18 remaining the half gave SIU the lead. The Salukis then took four of the final six points of the quarter to give the Salukis a 28-24 lead at halftime.
Third Quarter
While UIC scored first coming out of the break, four straight Saluki points built them a 32-26 lead. The Flames pulled within two briefly, but Green scored to bump the SIU lead back to four. UIC did not back down however, eventually tying the game at 34-34 with 4:19 on the clock.
More ties were had at 36-36, 38-38, and 40-40. Cooper gave Southern a lead again by nailing a three-pointer, but free throws from UIC made it a one-point game as the game entered the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Fourth Quarter
The teams traded the first five baskets of the fourth quarter before consecutive SIU scores built their lead to five with 7:43 to play. For the next few minutes, UIC kept scoring to make it a one possession game, but every time they did, SIU scored to take a multipossession lead again.
The Flames cut the deficit down to one at 5:36, but Southern kept scoring to stay ahead. SIU would create a multiple possession lead again with 22 seconds to go when they took a 63-58 lead, which turned into the final score for the game.
