A 2020 graduate of SIU, DJ Davis returned to his alma mater as a graduate assistant on the football staff in 2023, assisting the offense.
The Pompano Beach, Fla. native finished his playing career a Southern in 2019 and ranked among the all-time best running backs in school history. A two-time, all-conference selection, Davis totaled 5,431 career all-purpose yards — finishing with the second-most yards in school history and seventh in MVFC history.
He also totaled 2,697 career rushing yards — finishing 5th in school history and 112 career receptions — placing 11th in school history. As a junior, Davis rushed for 1,118 yards — the most by a Saluki running back since Jewel Hampton in 2011, averaging 6.28 yards per carry. He followed up with 1,026 yards (5.4 ave.) as a senior, including five, 100-yard rushing games.
Davis played in the Hula Bowl postseason all-star game after his senior year. He began his coaching career in 2022 as a graduate assistant on the Charleston Southern football staff.
