Opieczonek joins the coaching staff as a student assistant following a four-year career as a player on the men's tennis team. Opieczonek is one of SIU's most winning doubles players in program history. His 51 doubles wins is good for second all-time at SIU. His two-season doubles partnership with Jorge Cavero was also a successful one. The duo won a total of 28 matches from 2012-14 putting them in fifth place on the all-time wins list for doubles teams at SIU. In 2014 the tandem won 17 matches which is tied for seventh most in a single season at SIU. As a singles player Opieczonek racked up 26 wins. He enjoyed his most successful season in singles play as a junior when he finished 11-17. 2014-2015:
