Volleyball Loses 3-2 Match To SMS In Valley Play

Springfield, Ill. - Despite a better hitting percentage and more blocks overall, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (8-11, 3-7 MVC) lost game five 15-10 and an important MVC match 25-30, 30-27, 21-30, 30-24, 10-15 to Southwest Missouri State (14-4, 8-2 MVC) on the road on Friday, October 19. The Salukis hit .000 (4 kills, 4 errors, 20 attempts) in the deciding game.
"We played hard and we played well but our errors kept us from winning, especially in the last game when we had as many errors as kills," said Sonya Locke, Saluki head coach. "Kristie Kemner had a very good performance for us tonight with her 21 kills and 13 digs."
Kemner led SIU with 21 kills, 13 digs and a .333 (21 kills, 4 errors, 51 attempts) hitting percentage. Megan Baumstark added a double-double also with 51 assists and 12 digs.
Lindsey Schultz hit .316 (7 kills, 1 error, 19 attempts) with an incredible 10 blocks (2 solo, 8 assists), Tara Cains hit .300 (13 kills, 4 errors, 30 attempts) with 7 digs and 6 block assists. Jenny Noel added 11 kills and 9 digs, Kelly Harman had 10 kills and Lisa Vodin added 10 digs.
SIU out hit (.253 to .251) and out blocked (13 to 7) the Bears but couldn't get the victory. SMS had 11 aces to the Salukis six.
The Salukis will face Wichita State in Wichita, Kansas on Saturday, October 20 before facing Missouri in Columbia on October 22.
