Volleyball Beats Samford 3-2 At Evansville Tournament

Evansville, ind. - Kristie Kemner's 18 kills and 15 digs led Southern Illinois University (11-17, 5-11 MVC) to a 30-28, 27-30, 30-21, 28-30, 15-9 win over Samford (Ala.) University (12-19) at the Evansville Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Salukis hit .500 in game five of the match and finished the tournament with a 2-1 record with the victory.
"It was a tough match but we came back and took control in the fifth game to win the match which we didn't do against Morehead State this morning," Sonya Locke, Saluki head coach stated.
"We were disappointed that we lost this morning to Morehead State but we bounced back to get a win which was good for us. This tournament gives us good momentum going into the final weekend of the season at home."
Kemner hit .317 (18 kills, 5 errors, 41 attempts) and led five Salukis with double figures in kills. Kemner finished with three double-double performances in the two-day tournament.
Lindsey Schultz tied her career-high with 16 kills and added 8 block assists and a solo block. Schultz hit .387 (16 kills, 4 errors, 31 attempts) for the match. Tara Cains had a double-double night with 13 kills and 14 digs. She hit .478 with 13 kills and 2 errors in 23 attempts.
Jenny Noel had a double-double as well with 10 kills and 16 digs leaving her with 828 kills and 815 digs in her career. Her 2 block assists today make it 260 for her career, fifth best in SIU history. Noel's 23 attempts in the match move her into tenth all-time with 2301.
Megan Baumstark continued her strong play with a double-double of 56 assists and 16 digs in addition to 4 kills and no errors in 7 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage.
Freshman Erica Miller chipped in a career-high 13 digs, Qiana Nelson added 12 kills and Lisa Vodin added 11 digs in the win.
SIU hit .292 to just .173 for Samford and defended much better than the Bulldogs (92 digs to 57).
The Salukis will wrap up the season at home next weekend with 7 p.m. matches against Bradley (Nov. 16) and Northern Iowa (Nov. 17) at Davies Gym.
