Carbondale, Ill. - The SIU volleyball squad will wrap up the 2001 season with home matches against third-place Bradley and #17 Northern Iowa, the top MVC team, on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. respectively.
"They're definitely big matches. We want to make sure we finish in a tie for sixth or in seventh place so we need to at least get a split this weekend to guarantee that we do regardless of what everyone else does," said Sonya Locke, Saluki head coach.
Although SIU will not make the MVC Tournament, the Salukis can still have an impact on the seedings this weekend despite their current seventh place position.
"Getting a win this weekend will be big for us. We have competitors on this team so I think we can be spoilers since we're not going to the tournament. You have to play at the top of your game to beat Northern Iowa and I have to put together a great game plan for the weekend. We're at home in Davies Gym and can finish the season on a strong note with a couple wins and prove that we should have made the tournament," Locke added.
Seniors Jenny Noel, Megan Baumstark and Lisa Vodin will be playing their last matches in Davies Gym and as Salukis this weekend.
"They want to end their careers on a positive note. If they can go out with a smile on their faces this weekend it may make up for some of the team goals they didn't accomplish. They all did everything they were supposed to do while they were here," stated Locke.
"Jenny and Lisa went to the MVC Tournament as freshman and they know what that feels like and the excitement that surrounds it. They have made a positive impact on our program for four years. Jenny has played all four years and Lisa was the walk-on of the year the last two years in the MVC and may win it again. Megan lived up to expectations and was thrown into the mix after transferring and she gave us all she could and has made an impact."
On Saturday, November 17, fans who bring a donation of a nonperishable food item will get in free. The food will be part of a food drive to benefit the Women's Center.
