Des Moines, Iowa - Qiana Nelson's 14 kills led Southern Illinois University (9-16, 4-11 MVC) to a 30-26, 30-23, 30-25 sweep of Drake (5-17, 1-13 MVC). The win snapped a six-game Saluki losing skid.
"We broke through to win this match and it feels good to get back on the winning track. I'm happy that we played well enough to win. We hit well tonight and we haven't done that much lately," said Sonya Locke, Saluki head coach.
In addition to her 14 kills, Nelson hit .333 (14 kills, 4 errors, 30 attempts). Jenny Noel added 10 kills and 3 block assists while hitting .444 (10 kills, 2 errors, 18 attempts). Lindsey Schultz hit .417 (5 kills, no errors, 12 attempts) without an error and Tara Cains added 8 kills and hit .333 ( kills, 3 errors, 15 attempts).
SIU hit .277 to .136 for the Bulldogs. The Salukis had 11.5 blocks to 5 blocks for Drake.
Two Salukis also reached a couple of milestones over the weekend. Megan Baumstark added 38 assists against drake to break the 2000 barrier in just two seasons at SIU. She is now sixth on the career assists list with 2019 kills in her career. Kristie Kemner's 8 kills tonight moves her to ninth all-time with 1012 career kills.
"I'm so happy for Megan that she has over 2000 assists. She'll be able to take away something to remember her career by and know that she really contributed to our program," added Locke. "Kristie reaching 1000 kills is impressive and expected by myself and I can't wait to see where she ends up on the list."
The Salukis will be at the Evansville Tournament next weekend for matches against Evansville (Nov. 9), Morehead State and Samford (Nov. 10).
