Five Football Players Honored for Academic Achievements

ST. LOUIS ST. LOUIS - Three members of the Southern Illinois University football team were named to the Gateway Conference Academic All-Conference team, and two others earned honorable mention recognition, the league announced Tuesday.
Defensive end Bryan Archibald, kicker Scott Everhart and wide receiver Mark Shasteen were named to the second team, while offensive tackle Chad Graefen and running back Tom Koutsos made honorable mention.
Archibald, a senior with a 3.02 GPA in administration of justice, started every game for the Salukis this season and tied for the team lead in sacks (5.5) He was also tops among defensive linemen on the team in tackles with 39.
Everhart, a junior with a 3.40 GPA in information systems technology, handled both kickoffs and placekicking duties for SIU and was 7-of-10 (70.0 percent) from inside 40 yards on field goal attempts.
Shasteen, a computer and electrical engineering major with a 3.24 GPA, was bothered by injuries much of the season, but the senior wideout still finished second on the team in receptions (25) and stands seventh in school history with 102 career receptions.
Graefen, a senior who carries a 3.05 GPA, started every game this season and helped pave the way for 1,000-yard rusher Tom Koutsos. The offensive line allowed only 11 sacks on the season.
Koutsos, a junior with a 3.09 GPA in journalism, finished with 1,222 yards on the season and became the school's all-time rushing leader. He is the only player in school history to record multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Koutsos rushed for at least 100 yards against every conference school except Western Illinois (73) and Indiana State (59).
