Terre Haute, Ind. -
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (7-6, 0-3 in MVC) lost its third straight MVC contest, falling to Indiana State University 9-15, 9-15, 9-15, at the Hulman Center on Saturday, September 23. The Salukis first MVC weekend road trip of 2000 ends with two losses after being swept by Indiana State University (5-7, 0-3 in MVC) and Illinois State University last night. SIU was swept by Indiana State in 1999.
"They outdefended us. They had way more digs (56 to 46) than we did and we made too many miscues offensively that deflated the team. The players don't like me hear to say it's different on the road, but it is. You can't make mistakes and let a teams crowd into the game and give the team some confidence. At home it's harder to shake their confidence. It's just a matter of doing things consistently," Saluki head coach Sonya Locke said.
In game one, the Salukis battled back from a 9-3 deficit to close to 12-9, but couldn't overcome the Sycamores and lost 15-9. Cheryl Berg led the Sycamores with 6 kills and 6 digs. Tara Cains led SIU with 3 kills and 3 digs in the loss.
Indiana State ran away from SIU in game two, extending a 7-6 lead to a 15-9 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Cheryl Berg led the Sycamores with 10 kills and 5 digs. Tara Cains led SIU with 5 kills and 2 digs.
In game two, SIU battled back from a 10-4 deficit to cut the lead to 10-9, before Illinois State scored five straight points to take a 14-9 lead. The Salukis cut the lead to 14-12, before falling 15-12 in game two. The Redbirds added five more aces in the game.
Indiana State jumped out to a 7-1 lead and te Salukis couldn't get any closer than 10-6 in the game three 9-15 loss.
Sophomore Kristie Kemner led SIU with 10 kills and 11 digs and Tara Cains added 8 kills and 7 digs for SIU.
The Salukis will face non-conference foe SE Missouri State University on the road on Tuesday, September 26, at 7 p.m.
"They understand that matches are put on the schedule bcause they are significant, not just to fill dates. SE missouri is a conference champ that has been to the NCAA's and is a natural rival for us. We ned them on the schedule, they are a good team. How they react after this match is up to them. I'm consistent and expect them to be also," added Locke.
SIU's next home appearances will be September 29 vs. SW Missouri State and September 30 vs. Wichita State. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
