Normal, Ill. -
Southern Illinois University (7-5, 0-2 in MVC) was swept 0-3 by Illinois State University (5-3, 2-1 in MVC) on Friday, September 22 at Redbird Arena. The Salukis lost the match 9-15, 12-15, 5-15. SIU was swept by Illinois State in 1999.
"I'm speechless. I'm not sure what the team was thinking. Anytime you miss serves, you don't control the ball, that deflates your team. We got on a role and we would miss a serve or make an error that is uncharacteristic of the team. You have to expect the other team to capitalize on those mistakes we made at home," Saluki head coach Sonya Locke said. "Illinois State lured us into their pace and that's what a good team will do. They were steady and didn't make a lot of mistakes."
Down 10-3 in game one, the Salukis cut the lead to 11-7, but Illinois State University went on to win 15-9. ISU's Kendra Haselhorst's eight kills and four team aces led the Redbirds to the win.
In game two, SIU battled back from a 10-4 deficit to cut the lead to 10-9, before Illinois State scored five straight points to take a 14-9 lead. The Salukis cut the lead to 14-12, before falling 15-12 in game two. The Redbirds added five more aces in the game.
Illinois State broke away from a 3-3 tie in game three, scoring 12 of the games final 14 points to win the game and the match.
Sophomore Kristie Kemner led SIU with 14 kills and 11 digs. Jenny Noel (4 kills, 8 digs) and Tara Cains (4 kills, 11 digs) also played well for SIU.
SIU's next action will be on Saturday, September 23, against Indiana State in Terre Haute. The Salukis will face non-conference foe SE Missouri State University on the road on September 26, at 7 p.m.
The Salukis next home appearances will be September 29 vs. SW Missouri State and September 30 vs. Wichita State. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
