Despite jumping out to a 7-3 lead in game one, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (8-11, 1-7 in MVC) couldn't hold off the University of Northern Iowa (16-4, 8-0 in MVC) volleyball team, falling in three games to the Missouri Valley Conference leaders 15-8, 15-7, 15-5.
"I wanted to see us play with some consistency this weekend and we didn't display that tonight. Even if you get up on Northern Iowa, they aren't going to die, they'll fight back and do whatever it takes to win and they did that in the first game. We've seen them before, but we didn't do enough to stop them," said Sonya Locke, Saluki head volleyball coach. "It takes time to adjust as a team to our new setter and we hoped those adjustments would have been made by now. We still have some hesitation. We're never going to toss in the towel. We'll keep working to get better and work towards our goals. We're trying to find what works and we'll keep trying until we get it right. We did play well at times, but we have to play better defense and be consistent."
Kristie Kemner led the Salukis with 10 kills and six digs. Qiana Nelson added a five kills ad 9 digs for SIU. Kim McCaffrey led the Panthers with 10 kills and two digs.
The Salukis host Bradley on October 14. SIU will also entertain Indiana State on October 20, and Illinois State on October 21 the following weekend in Davies Gym. All matches will be played at 7 p.m.
