Wichita, Kan. -
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (8-15, 1-11 in MVC) lost its seventh consecutive MVC match to Wichita State (5-18, 1-11 in MVC) on Friday, October 27. The Shockers swept Southern Illinois 15-13, 15-5, 15-5 to win their first MVC match of the year.
The Salukis swept the first meeting in Carbondale, and played the Shockers close in the first game before Wichita won the game and match.
"We made a good effort in the first game, but we have a tendency to self destruct. We cut the lead to 14-13 and missed a serve and you can't do that. It kills your team. We couldn't come back after that. It's tough after you put out that kind of energy to win a game and then someone does something to hurt us. We have to take control of the game," Saluki head coach Sonya Locke said.
Trailing 6-1 in game one, the Salukis battled back to cut the Shocker lead to 14-13 after holding off Wichita State at game point nine times. The Shockers finally won 15-13. Lindsey Schultz led the Salukis with 4 kills and Jenny Noel added 3 kills and 5 digs.
In game two, the Shockers shot out to a 9-1 lead and the Salukis never recovered, losing the game 15-5. Jenny Noel led Southern Illinois with 5 digs in the game two loss.
The Salukis fell behind 5-1 and after battling back to a 6-4 deficit, the Shockers outscored Southern Illinois 9-1 to win the game and the match.
The Salukis travel to Southwest Missouri State for a match on Saturday, October 28, trying to snap a seven game losing streak.
"The kids know what they are capable of and I have to find a way to get them to see that they can still accomplish some things," added Locke.
Jenny Noel led the Salukis with nine kills and 12 digs, with a .353 hitting percentage.
