TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Jermaine Dearman scored as time expired to give Southern Illinois a 61-59 victory over Indiana State on Monday.
Dearman took an inbounds pass from the opposite end of the court with 1.6 seconds left, turned and banked in a 10-footer for the game-winning basket.
The victory enabled Southern Illinois (16-13, 10-8 Missouri Valley Conference) to tie Indiana State (18-11, 10-8) for fourth place in the conference standings and sweep the season series from the Sycamores.
The two teams will meet in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament Saturday in St. Louis. Southern Illinois is the No. 4 seed.
Dearman had eight points and five rebounds as the Sycamores erased a 15-point second-half deficit and took a 59-57 lead on Matt Renn's basket with 56 seconds left. The basket capped off a 17-4 run in the last five minutes.
Abel Schrader hit two free throws for a 59-59 tie with 36.6 seconds left.
Indiana State was called for a shot-clock violation to set up Southern's final possession as Kent Williams knocked a ball loose as Kelyn Block drove for the basket.
Southern Illinois shot 44 percent in the first 20 minutes and scored the last six points in taking a 33-21 at the half.
Renn had 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Sycamores as they lost for the sixth time in eight games.
