Women's Track Team Takes The Lead As Caryn Poliquin Shatters School Record

Saluki senior Caryn Poliquin shattered her own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 59 feet, 4 1/4 inches, leading the Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's track team to an early lead after one day at the McDonald's Invitational in the Student Rec Center.
Poliquin's throw easily won the event and smashed her school record (58-0 1/4) by more than a foot. The throw was not only a personal and school record, she easily passed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 58 feet, 1 inch. "I'm overjoyed and excited," said Poliquin. "I never expected to do this (pass NCAA provisional qualifying mark). I'm real happy to get this mark."
SIU's Jaime Waters finished third with a toss of 48 feet, giving the Saluki women 16 points and the lead. Wichita State is second (12 pts), University of Missouri-Kansas City is third (5 pts) and Eastern Illinois is fourth (2 pts) in the women's meet. The Saluki women won the McDonald's Invitational in 2000.
Saluki Adam Judge won the men's weight throw with a heave of 59 feet, 7 1/2 inches, to run away from the field, winning by more than five feet. SIU's Rob Firrell took third with a 49 foot, 6 1/4 inch throw, giving Southern Illinois the lead with 16 points. Eastern Illinois (12 pts) is second and Wichita State (2 pts) sits third. The Saluki men finished second at the 2000 McDonald's Invitational.
The McDonald's Invitational will kick off day two with the women's long jump and pentathlon at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, and will conclude with the men's 4 x 400 meter relay, which is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Ticket cost for the meet is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.
The women's field features Southern Illinois, Bradley University, Austin Peay State University, Wichita State University, Eastern Illinois University, Murray State University, Tennessee Tech University, University of Tennessee-Martin, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Lincoln University, and McKendree College.
The men's field consists of Southern Illinois, Bradley University, Wichita State University, Eastern Illinois University, Murray State University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Lincoln University, Rend Lake College, and McKendree College.
